A few months ago, I was taken with the idea of making my 7-year-old daughter a doll for Christmas. Considering I really canât sew, it was an odd thing to think I could do. My sewing basket usually comes out only if someone loses a button or my sonâs favorite teddy bear loses his head.

I really meant it when I said I wouldn't be hibernating in the sewing room from Thanksgiving until Christmas this year. I planned to use that time to write, listen to my stash of Christmas CDs, and view every holiday movie available from NetFlix. And bake, of course.

Shirley Boyd was gifted with a talent to sew. In 1967, while in the eighth grade in
Starkville, Miss., she won first prize for designing the high school queen's homecoming gown. At age 17, Boyd made dresses for a 17-member wedding party. From 1978 through 1997 she owned the Unlimited Sewing Shop in the Beverly neighborhood of Chicago. And now, Boyd has brought her talents to her new business ...

  1. I love that so many sewists use their skills to help others. I feel like I am always hibernating in my sewing room, winter, spring, summer and fall!
